WordPress themes available for download from assorted places online are generally packed in .zip files ( i.e. Say I am installing a theme for a recipe blog. To utilise the theme, I might need to unpackage the file, then upload it ( possibly using FTP ) into my WordPress themes folder.

I would not get a theme that isn't widget prepared. Regularly 'good enough' is ok. I ordinarily purchase a single theme and if I am keen on it, upgrade to an all-theme purchase.
